Let's get it straight - where does wine get its color from?

It's all in the skin - the skin is what harbors the coloring pigments. To be more exact, it holds the colorants and tannins, and the juice is what harbors sugar, acidity and water. Of course, the color of wine also depends on the grape variety, the vine's age, location of the grapevine, year of harvest, and weather conditions. However, the main color comes from the winemaker himself (the aging period, method, fermentation, as well as other production aspects).

This is why the visual grading of wine during a tasting is so important.
